One of Australia’s most decorated basketballers Darcee Garbin has today been named the Tasmania Jewels inaugural Captain in an history-making appointment.
Garbin will be flanked by Vice Captains Steph Reid and Keely Froling, formalising one of the strongest leadership groups in the WNBL.
“I love how calm Darcee is under pressure and her ability to bring everyone together,” Tasmania Jewels Head Coach Claudia Brassard said.
“She will lift the team to meet the big moments by building strong connections in all those smaller moments.”
Garbin is a multiple-medal winning Australian Opal, two-time WNBL championship winner with the Townsville Fire, former captain of the Perth Lynx and Europe champion too.
The 32-year-old from Western Australia said she was humbled to be selected to lead the Tasmania Jewels in their historic WNBL debut season.
“I’m beyond honoured and proud,” Garbin said. “It is a great privilege to lead the Jewels, especially in our first season.
“On the court, it’s about building connection and accountability. Off the court, it’s about making sure everyone can be their authentic self.
“We’re a new team, a young team, and almost everyone is new to calling Tasmania home, so we have a huge opportunity to create something truly special from the ground up.”
Brassard said choosing the Captains was a difficult choice.
“We took a character-first approach to recruitment which is great because we have an extraordinary group of humble and talented athletes, but it makes decisions like this tough.
“All of our leaders are unique, they really complement each other, and that’s what will make us as a team so strong.
“Darcee is an authentic leader, she deeply cares for others and wants to see everyone grow.
“Keely has a courageous voice, she has your back, speaks up and isn’t afraid to question or challenge any situation.
“Steph connects everyone, she’s relatable and empathetic, because whether you’re deep on the bench or had the call up, she’s been in that position too.
“We have a phenomenal group of leaders and players, and we can’t wait to play for every Tasmanian, it’s not long now.”
The Jewels first game is scheduled for October 15 at the MyState Bank Arena in Hobart and the first game at the Launceston Silverdome on October 31.
