RECENT FORM
The Tasmania Jewels will make history today when they take the court for their first ever game in front of a home crowd at their northern home, the Silverdome.
The Jewels will be taking on the undefeated Sydney Flames, who sit top of the ladder with a 4-0 win-loss record.
The Tasmanians took the league by storm in their opening game, with a thumping 103-90 defeat of the Geelong Venom at MyState Bank Arena. The Jewels are currently fourth overall after an away game loss against the Southside Flyers last week.
Jewels marquee player Steph Reid said the team had been counting down the days until they could play in front of a home crowd again.
“We’re really excited to get to Launnie and play our first game at the Silverdome,” Reid said.
“Sydney are going to be a really tough side, they’re 4-0 right now but I think we’ve taken away a lot of lessons from that game against Southside and we’re really excited to get back on the court again.
“It’s been 10 days now between games, so we’re absolutely itching at the bit to get out there and we can’t wait to play again.”
With the Jewels’ Launceston local Keely Froling out with a calf injury, locals will recognise her replacement Mikaela Ruef a former Tornado.
Development Player Andie Smith will replace Import Madina Okot, whose WNBA team the Atalanta Dream remains in championship contention.
Jewels Head Coach Claudia Brassard will announce the Jewels starting five tomorrow, around an hour before the 3:00pm tip-off.
The Sydney Flames are coming in hot, the only team in the league to remain undefeated.
Flames Coach Renae Garlepp boasts a revamped roster that’s firing on all cylinders, thanks to being top three in points per game (86), field goal percentage (46.1), free-throw percentage (79.5), assists per game (20), steals (9.8) and blocks (6.5).
Leading this charge is the Harbour City’s dynamic backcourt Lauren Nicholson (18.5 points a game) and Jaz Shelley (career-high 17.5), with Opal Issie Bourne (14.8) also shining.
