Tasmania, there’s a new Queen in town. All hail, the Tasmania Jewels official mascot, Queenie.
Queenie is the Queen Ant who rules the nest, she’s fun, sassy, loves basketball and her mission in life is to inspire every girl and boy she meets.
Queenie was officially unveiled today, and will be visiting schools, clinics and fans across the state in the weeks before the Jewels first WNBL27 game in Hobart on October 15.
Jewels Coach Claudia Brassard said Queenie represented everything the Tasmania Jewels stood for.
“The Queen Ant is a leader, she’s strong, confident and unites everyone, and that’s exactly what the Jewels are all about,” Brassard said.
“We have an incredible team of players who are here to win and defend the island with humility and authenticity.
“Queenie is an important part of our team, she’ll help us to boost the visibility and value of women and girls in sport, leaving a glittering ant trail of inspiration and aspiration wherever she goes.”
Jewels and JackJumpers Head of Community Fran Lockhart said having Queenie join the JackJumpers mascot Jack the Jumper was an important milestone for the club.
“Kids are going to go wild for Queenie,” Lockhart said. “She’s sassy, fun, confident and the best hype-girl.
“Since the JackJumpers started in 2021, we’ve seen Jack the Jumper become an icon, kids love him just as much, if not more, than they love the players.
“It’s definitely going to be double the trouble to have Queenie join Jack, but together they have such an incredible ability to make fans happy and inspire kids to have fun and be active.”
Proud Tasmanian business Peachie Clean, founded by Jess Sullivan, is Queenie’s official partner for her inaugural season.
In the coming weeks, Queenie will be visiting schools and fans across the state, adding to the more than 500 school visits and 1,000-plus clinics that the club has undertaken in the past five years.
The Jewels first game is scheduled for October 15 at the MyState Bank Arena in Hobart and the first game at the Launceston Silverdome on October 31.
