It’s official, the Tasmania Jewels will make history when they take to the court for the first time on October 15 for their debut Women’s National Basketball League game.

Fittingly, the Tasmania Jewels Round 1 game against Geelong Venom will be the season opener of WNBL27 and it will be played right here, in front of a Jewels home crowd in Hobart.

The WNBL27 schedule, released today, confirms that the Tasmania Jewels have 11 home games across the 16 round and 24 game season.

The Jewels will play six home games in Hobart at MyState Bank Arena and five at the Launceston Silverdome, with the first northern game set for Round 3 against Sydney Flames on October 31.

Tasmania Jewels Coach Claudia Brassard the countdown was on and the excitement was building.

“In just over 100 days Tasmanians can watch and cheer for their very own Tasmania Jewels in a WNBL season opening match right here at home,” Brassard said. “To be able to share this milestone moment, this part of history, with a home crowd is the stuff of dreams.

“Tasmanians are really getting behind the Jewels, and we can’t wait to suit up and get out there and play for every Tasmanian, especially young Tasmanians, to build something bigger than basketball.”

Brassard said the team list was almost done with three more rostered and two import sports left.

“We’re here to win and we’re building a team to do that for Tasmania,” Brassard said. “We have two Opals in Steph Reid and Darcee Garbin, the incredible force of Keely Froling, home-grown-hero Taylor Mole, rising star Katie Deeble and a talent-packed group of Development players.

“Most important of all, the Jewels have a huge and not-so-secret weapon, the Ant Army. We’ve seen them lift the JackJumpers to victory and the Jewels can’t wait to be a part of that too. The Jewels Membership will go live on July 14 and we’re excited for Tasmanians to join the Jewels.”

The WNBL27 season includes Indigenous Round (November 21-24), Mental Health Round (December 3-8), Pride Round (January 7-12) and HoopsFest in Perth (January 13-17).
